Chlamydia pneumoniae

Cut off:
Standard setting:

IgA / IgM 10%
IgG 20%

Freely adjustable as required.

The following bands are characterized:

LPS (diff. mol. weights) 35 kD MOMP 39 kD 48 kD
54 kD 60 kD (HSP) 90 kD
92 kD 98 kD

Specificity:

There are very strong cross-reactions between antibodies against C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae (Antibodies against C. trachomatis cause a strong reaction in C. pneumoniae), especially in the low molecular weight region.

The 48 kD and 54 kD proteins do however seem to be specific to C. pneumoniae.

Comments:

The popular rate of contamination with C. pneumoniae is very high. One can therefore always expect a reaction from persistent antibodies (IgG) in the immunoblot (LPS, weak MOMP or other bands which are not characterized and whose significance is at the moment uncertain.

Interpretation:

IgG:
The positive IgG results are uncertain if 2 characterised bands are marked.

The IgG results are positive if 3 or more characterised bands are marked.

IgM/ IgA:
The results are positive if at least 2 characterised bands are marked.

Further assistance in interpretation:
IgA antibodies against C. pneumoniae appear in cases of chronic pneumonia.
According to literature, antibodies against 54 kD, an unidentified band at 40 kD and 60 kD (HSP), point to a higher risk of arterial sclerosis.
