Yersinia enterocolitica

Cut off:
Standard settings:

IgA 10%
IgG 15%

Antigen:
Processed calcium deficient Y. enterocolitica cultures (serovar 0:9).

The following bands are characterized:

Yop 1 (58 kD) Yop 2a (48 kD) Yop 2b (46 kD) Yop 3 (40 kD)
Yop 4a (36 kD) Yop 4b (34 kD) Yop 5 (25 kD) sp-protein (80 kD)

Specificity:

The human pathogenic Yersinia owes its high antigenicity to the so-called ”release proteins” or ”Yersinia outer proteins” (Yop). These are extremely specific to human pathogenic Yersinia.
top

Yop 1 (58 kD)

Little is yet known about this protein. It is probably involved in the Yersinia´s active iron intake from its surroundings.

Yop 2a (48 kD)

This protein is responsible for the inhibition of thrombocytic aggregation.
table

Yop 2b (46 kD)

This protein makes the Yersinia resistant to phagocytosis.

Yop 3 (40 kD)

Is also known as V-antigen. Little is known about the role of this protein.
table

Yop 4a (36 kD)

The function of this protein is also disputed. It is important in interpretation in that, according to literature, the main IgA response is directed against it.

Yop 4b (34 kD)

The function of this protein is also disputed.
table

Yop 5 (25 kD)

This protein plays an important role in the cytotoxicity of the Yersinia.

Sp-Protein

Nothing is known about this protein. It seems to be specific to Yersinia, is however often marked. Is not included in the interpretation.
table

Comments:

This test kit has not been approved according to AMG for the diagnosis of yersinia- induced enteritis infections.

Interpretation:

IgG results positive:
4 or more Yops marked.

IgG results uncertain:
3 Yop’s marked.

IgA results positive:
2 or more Yops marked.

Further assistance in interpretation:
Persistant Yersinia-specific IgA antibodies are usually detected in patients suffering from Yersinia-induced arthritis.
Additional antibody reactions in the immunoblot, such as heat shock proteins (at the moment not characterised), point to a chronic inflammation (especially an IgA response).
