Serological characterization of an autoimmune disease is based on detection of autoantibodies or profiles of autoantibodies.

Rheumatic diseases are associated with appearance of several autoantibodies often. Here autoantibodies are directed against elements of cell nucleus of cytoplasm.

Many autoantibodies are specific for disease. Detection of defined marker antibodies has a high clinical relevance for diagnosis of disease.

Hep2 cell lysate as a source for antigen enables ANA/AMA immunoblot not only to detect the most frequent antinuclear autoantibodies (ANA) but also very rare autoantibodies like NuMA (nuclear mitotic spindle apparatus protein), Ku and PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen).
